Outline of Research at the Start

This study aims to explore longitudinally how students’ capacity to speak (CTS) in their English second language (L2) and their "language other than English" (LOTE) L3 change before, during and after their study abroad (SA) in a non-English speaking country by answering the following research questions:
1. What patterns will emerge in learners’ CTS in L2 (English) before, during and after SA?
2. What patterns will emerge in learners’ CTS in their L3 (LOTE) before, during and after SA?
3. What factors might underlie these patterns?
4. What are the implications for dual language SA programs?

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In the 2023 academic year, I transcribed and analysed student journal and interview data from their study abroad. I interviewed participants after SA. I presented results at four conferences: two international (British Association of Applied Linguistics and EuroSLA) and two domestic (JALT National and JALT study abroad special interest group). I published a refereed journal paper and had abstracts accepted for a forthcoming book chapter.

Results indicated that two students outperformed students who attended English-speaking countries in their English test improvement. I'm focusing on these two students for upcoming conferences and a book chapter. It seems that they achieved this phenomenal success mainly through immersing themselves talking with friends who use English as an L2.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

The beginning of the study was delayed due to COVID-19 but I have collected sufficient data.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In this 2024 academic year, I plan to transcribe the post-SA interviews and analyse the data. I will visit Aston University library in the UK to research in depth. I have two abstracts accepted for a journal special issue and an edited book. I plan to present domestically at JALT Pan-SIG, JALT SA-SIG and JALT National Conferences.
