| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究は、日本近世から近代を通貫する視座から、意思決定にともない作成された文書の様式の成立と変遷に着目し、行政文書のみならず個人・民間文書など私文書をも分析の対象とし、文書そのものの持つ諸要素の分析を駆使することで、組織の意思決定過程の分析に留まらない意思決定の慣行の形成そのものを解明する。この目的を達成するために、3年間の補助事業期間中で、諸藩、大蔵・内務省、帝国大学を分析対象に定め、前半2年間でそれぞれの政治的意思決定に関わる公私文書の収集と分析を行い、最後の1年間でその結果を比較検討していくことを通じて、日本型の意思決定慣行の歴史的展開を総合的に考察していく。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research project examined how the format of documents produced in decision-making contexts changed over time from Japan's early modern to modern periods. Through a comparative analysis of the particular characteristics of documentary forms in each period, it sought not only to understand the decision-making process within organizations in Japan during both periods, but also to clarify the formation of customary decision-making practices. By analyzing a wide range of public and private documents from a variety of sources - including those from large early modern domains, modern central and prefectural governments, major retailers, and prewar universities - with an approach rooted in archival studies and aimed at a total, comprehensive evaluation of the topic, the project succeeded in substantially enhancing our knowledge about the formation of customary decision-making practices unique to Japan.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究の学術的意義は、公に偏重しがちであった意思決定の諸慣行のあり方とそれらが果たした役割について、公私双方の観点から近世～近代を歴史学的に通観して分析したことにある。本研究が各時期の歴史学・アーカイブズ学の成果を多数生み出したことはいうまでもないが、全体として日本近世・近現代史料学の前進に寄与するものと評価することができる。今後これらの成果をさらに総合的に発展させていくことで、近世から近代を連続的に俯瞰した政治的意思形成・組織形成の特質を解明することにつながることが期待される。これは歴史学における学術的成果であると同時に、日本社会の政治的・社会的理解を促す社会的意義をも有するものである。
