Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
‘Sustainable use’ in CITES, has been recognized as a regulatory model which is to ensure the legal and sustainable trade of wildlife, including commercially exploited marine species, by way of providing institutional advice and support. It is noteworthy that IUCN SSN Shark Specialist Group has been continuously engaging in scientific assessment, and in support of the implementation by national authorities and local communities. Active engagement by scientists in the regulatory process has produced the successful outcome, contributing to the legitimacy and effectiveness of CITES. Japan has never been collaborating with the international network of scientists, has made reservations to almost all the marine species. As a result, some regulatory gaps has been identified between CITES and its domestic laws, which resulted in the fixation of its negotiation position. It is suggested that Japan should reconsider its negotiating strategy, to be more align with global governance in CITES.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
