Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
Low birth weight infants are at increased risk for lifestyle-related diseases later in life. Among them, preterm infants may show no apparent problems during early infancy but often exhibit sensory and developmental difficulties in later childhood. This study assessed sensory and developmental characteristics in preterm infants at age three, classified by gestational age. While no significant differences were found in sensory processing, a relationship between gestational age and cognitive adaptive development was suggested. Additionally, we examined the association between urinary oxytocin levels in early infancy and feeding methods, as well as mother-infant interaction. Infants who were sampled soon after breastfeeding had higher oxytocin levels, suggesting that physical and emotional contact during feeding may promote hormone secretion. These findings highlight the importance of early support for preterm infants, particularly in terms of sensory-based dietary and emotional care.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
