Outline of Research at the Start |
This project is a mixed-methods study of internationalization of the curriculum (IoC) in English-medium instruction (EMI) programs at Japanese universities, with a focus on the ways IoC has evolved amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The study will uncover factors that enable and block IoC in the context of the “New Normal” in Japanese higher education, characterized by increases in online learning and other innovative approaches to higher education provision.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year we delivered a presentation at the Japan Comparative Education Society (JCES) annual conference A paper we submitted on COIL and IoC last year is still undergoing review at an international journal. We have continued research, development and networking for our book project. I attended the European Association of International Education conference in Rotterdam, Netherlands for this purpose, while Leyla went to Bangkok Thailand, to attend the 5th Stakeholders Meeting on Internationalization of Higher Education in Asia and the Pacific: Challenging Knowledge Diplomacy to Achieve our Common Agenda. I have begun interviews focused on inclusive internationalization while Leyla has conducted numerous interviews regarding international joint-universities in Egypt, Poland and Vietnam.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The plan for publishing our research on COIL and IoC has been delayed by a slower than expected review process at the journal we submitted the paper to, but besides this the project has been progressing as planned. Dr Radjai and I have made progress in developing our ideas and plan for a co-authored book. I have begun data collection for an investigation into inclusive internationalization, and Dr. Radjai has conducted extensive interviews for a separate KAKEN project on bi-national universities, findings from which will also contribute to our project on IoC.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The focus of the remaining time for this project will be on developing and completing the book project. This will entail further research, data collection and analysis, recruitment of possible chapter authors, liaising with publishing companies, and writing up the book chapters.
