Outline of Research at the Start

This research will establish new methods for implementing edutainment style videos for increasing student engagement with educational materials and concept retention.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

I have created a YouTube channel to investigate the relationship between fun, 'edutainment' videos and academic, skills and concepts videos. In the last year, the channel has gained over 47,000 subscribers and over 4,000,000 views.

The channel has gained most of those subscribers (47,000) in the last year of original funding, resulting in a request for an extension of funding for one more year.

The original question has mostly been answered, though the original data needs to be updated with the current data for the most accurate conclusions.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The project involved creating a YouTube channel for chemistry education and communication and investigating whether edutainment could encourage engagement with academic skills based videos. The original target was for a number of subscribers in the hundreds, whereas now we have over 47,000 subscribers. This has resulted in a much greater data load than we were expecting.

The channel also won the 2023 科学コミュニケーション賞 from the Japan Union for Science and Technology for its contribution to chemistry communication.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

We are planning to increase our subscriber numbers to over 100,000 this year (2024) as a key chemistry education resource and as a means of gathering important demographic information.

We are planning publications on: viewer demographics and viewer interest; methods of converting crystallographic data to Blender software for easy visualisation of complex structures, and an original history of the Avogadro number.
