Outline of Research at the Start

プラズマ乱流は、無衝突プラズマにおける物質・運動量輸送、粒子加熱・加速の重要な要素である。本研究では、宇宙プラズマ乱流の発生機構の解明を目的として、NASAのMagnetospheric Multiscale(MMS)衛星が取得した高精度かつ高分解能の地球磁気圏プラズマ観測データを、乱流モードを同定できる革新的な解析手法を用いて解析する。特に、プラズマ拡散輸送や加熱への直接的な影響が期待されるが、実態はよくわかっていない、ミクロ乱流の発生・進化過程に焦点をあて、地球磁気圏内外の各領域にどのような乱流が介在し、乱流が物質・エネルギー輸送に寄与しているかどうか、観測的に理解することを目指す。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

プラズマ乱流は太陽風や実験室プラズマなどプラズマ宇宙に普遍的に存在する現象であり、プラズマの輸送や混合などに関わる重要な素過程であるが、その励起・発達機構はよくわかっていない。その理由の一つはプラズマ乱流が成長する現場の直接観測が容易でないことである。本研究では、太陽風と地球磁気圏の相互作用によってプラズマ乱流が励起される現場である磁気圏境界領域等における人工衛星直接詳細観測データを最先端のデータ解析手法を用いて分析し、乱流の励起過程に関する知見を得ることを目的としている。
2023年度は、Magnetospheric Multiscale(MMS)衛星によって太陽風磁場が南向きという条件下で観測された磁気圏境界でのケルビン・ヘルムホルツ不安定(KHI)イベントを解析した。太陽風磁場が北向きの場合には、KHIに伴って磁気リコネクションが誘発され、プラズマ輸送に寄与しうることが理論的にも観測的にも検証されていた。しかし、太陽風磁場が南向きの時に磁気リコネクションがKHIの成長に伴って誘発されるかどうかについては、数値シミュレーションによる予測はあったものの、観測的証拠はなかった。2023年度は、KHIによって成長した渦乱流中の電流層の三次元磁場構造をMMS衛星の磁場・プラズマ観測データを用いて再現し、渦中の密度勾配層で磁気リコネクションが起こっていることを世界で初めて発見した。KHI渦中の密度勾配層で、低域混成ドリフト不安定と呼ばれる運動論的プラズマ不安定の成長に伴って磁気リコネクションが誘発される、という三次元数値シミュレーションの予測と整合する観測である。これは、太陽風磁場が南向きの場合の磁気圏境界層における無衝突プラズマ混合過程を同定したという点で意義のある成果である。

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

プラズマ乱流中で磁気エネルギーがいかに散逸されるかという問題は無衝突プラズマ乱流における最重要課題の一つであるが、2022年に報告した「磁気リコネクションが起こっている電流層での磁場消滅」の発見(Hasegawa et al. 2022)は、乱流磁場の散逸機構の一つになりうるという点で、問題解決のための転換点になりうる画期的な成果であると考える。
研究協力者の一人として海外で数値シミュレーション研究を行っていた中村琢磨氏が2022年度中に研究業界を去ったため、理論・数値実験の側面からのサポートが激減し、研究の進捗がやや遅れている。
また現在、MMS衛星ミッションの科学成果をまとめたレヴュー論文集が準備されており、研究代表者は磁気リコネクションの直接観測データを解析するための一連の手法の概要を整理してまとめたレヴュー論文の筆頭著者として、国際研究者チームをリードし、論文の執筆・投稿・改訂を行った。2022年度から2023年度にかけて、この作業に多くの時間が割かれたことも、データ解析の進捗が遅れている理由の一つである。しかし、このレヴュー論文でまとめたデータ解析手法群のいくつかは、乱流を含む様々な宇宙プラズマ現象の解析にも利用できるものであり、この論文出版も本研究課題の成果の一つとなる予定である。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

2024年度はMagnetospheric Multiscale(MMS)衛星によって地球磁気圏境界領域で同定されたケルビン・ヘルムホルツ不安定に伴う表面波・プラズマ渦乱流の観測事例の中から、特殊な例として、コロナ質量放出(CME)の発生下で太陽風の密度が著しく低下し、太陽風のアルヴェンマッハ数が1を下回った(亜アルヴェン速度太陽風)時の観測事例のデータ解析を進める。
また、プラズマ乱流を解析するための新しい手法の開発に着手する。特に、プラズマ乱流中で発生することがある磁気リコネクションは、しばしば強い温度異方性(磁力線に平行方向と垂直方向の温度が異なる状況)を伴って観測されることがあるので、温度異方性を考慮した上で磁気リコネクション領域の二次元構造(磁場や電子の速度場)をその場観測データから再現するための解析手法を開発する。理論的なアイデアはほぼ完成しているので、今後はデータ解析プログラムを改良し、数値コードを試験していく予定である。
