Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
In this study, we examined the relationship of seasons of fertilization and birth with BAT activity and density, as assessed by positron emission tomography and infrared time-resolved spectroscopy in order to investigate intergenerational effects of parental exposure to meteorological factors on brown adipose tissue (BAT). We found that the proportion of high BAT activity and density was higher in those who conceived during a cold season than in those during a warm season. The season of birth did not affect BAT activity. There was no gender difference in the effect of fertilization season. The individuals who conceived during the cold season showed higher adaptive thermogenesis and lower body mass index (BMI). These results suggest that the parental cold exposure prior to fertilization is transmitted to the offspring, promoting BAT activation and reducing the risk of obesity in humans.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
