Outline of Research at the Start |
This project is a multiphase international project exploring the meaning or professional behaviour and leadership in medical education across two cultures. The project uses Q-methodology to explore and extract the core viewpoints of key stakeholder groups (including medical students, clinicians and administrators) from 60 participants in Japan and the UK. This research will uncover cultural differences in the perceptions between groups and across cultures of professional behaviour and leadership, informing the development of culturally relevant professionalism and leadership frameworks.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Results have been presented internationally at the AMEE conference 2022 and domestically at the Japan Society for Medical Education conference 2022 and 2021. Confirmation of a further presentation at the 2024 Japan Society for Medical Education is awaited. This research has been awarded the Japan Society for Medical Education Silver Award 2021. A paper is under consideration by the international English journal, Medical Education.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Delay due to 1 year maternity leave by principal researcher Further delays due to staff changes at Imperial College London, UK (partner university) Impact of COVID-19 which affected recruitment and interview schedules
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
A further 1 year extension has been granted. In this time the data will undergo secondary examination to explore cultural differences related to leadership factors (focusing on power and hierarchy) that affect professionalism (phase 2). A further research paper is expected to be completed in the remaining time.
