Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
Carbon dioxide rich water (CO2) was used as a strategy to protect para-athletes with impaired sweating and cutaneous vasomotor functions due to cervical and spinal cord injury from heat injury. Since no significant increase in sweating was observed in several para-athletes after one week of lower limb bathing in CO2, we planned to extend the consecutive bathing period (more than two weeks), but the COVID-19 prevented us from conducting additional experiments. When mouse fibroblasts were cultured in a high-concentration CO2 (20%) environment for 24 hours, HO-1 expression, an antioxidant and vasodilator factor, and HSP70, a cytoprotective factor, increased, suggesting that continuous bathing in a CO2 may be able to acquire heat acclimation at the cellular level.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
