| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究課題では、近年図書館が新たに設置された、あるいは大きくリニューアルされた自治体を対象とし、インタビュー等（質的手法）と地域統計の詳細分析（量的手法）から、具体的なインパクトとしてどのようなものがあったのかを明らかにする。さらに質問紙調査と他自治体との統計比較等により、そのインパクトの大小を測定できる手法を確立していく。複数自治体を対象にこれらの調査を行うことで、インパクトに基づく公共図書館評価の基礎を確立することが本研究の大きな目標である。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study aimed to develop a method to measure the impact of public libraries on local communities. Two approaches were used: quantitative analysis of regional socio-economic data, and qualitative research into individual library experiences.
The former found no clear impact on demographics or education. The latter;through memory-based surveys and life history interviews revealed that libraries play a role in fostering reading-related cultural capital, though parental influence complicates measurement.
To address this, a survey was created asking about parental reading habits, household book ownership, library use history, and current reading practices. Results showed that library use independently influences reading-related cultural capital, even when controlling for family background. This suggests the method can be refined and applied at the municipal level to assess both the presence and scale of public libraries’ impact on cultural capital in local communities.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
公共図書館の重要な役割として読書活動の推進があることは自明である一方で、実際に公共図書館が読書推進の機能を果たしているのか、それも元々読書習慣がある人々ではなく、図書館がなければ読書習慣を持ち得なかった人々にも読書文化資本獲得の機会を与えているのかは、従来必ずしも検証されておらず、それゆえ当然ながらその影響の大きさも確認されてこなかった。
本研究の成果は実際に図書館が読書文化資本を持たない人々に、その獲得機会を与えていることを示すものであり、その測定手法も提供することで、各地域の図書館の読書に関するインパクト測定の道筋もつけるものである。政策実施・モニタリングにも大きな役割を果たしうると言える。
