Outline of Research at the Start

The research in final book form will be composed as below:
Part 1: Historico-critical overview: General, Historical Jesus, Narrative additions, Conceptual reflections
Part 2: Image-idea theory: Notion/event theory, Image-idea interplay, Case study: Japan's Hidden Christians, Reconsidering Jesus' execution
Part 3: Re-orienting Jesus' teachings: Parables, Art and phenomenology
Part 4: Temporality: Finitude, Being-toward-death, Re-assessing crucifixion, Summary positioning
Part 5: Exploratory philotheology: Christianity absent systemics, A new Christianity, Fitting new into old, Call re-construction

Outline of Final Research Achievements

During the course of the grant period I was able to complete the research and publish one book, two journal articles, and present at three academic conferences. The book is called "The Christ is Dead, Long Live the Christ: A Philotheologic Prayer, a Hermeneutics of Healing" and is published by Resource Publications (part of Wipf & Stock; Eugene, Oregon, USA, 2022). The two journal articles are publicly available. Unfortunately due to constraints connected with the Covid-19 pandemic I was not able to travel to Chicago, USA, for the American Philosophical Association's Central Division meeting where I was scheduled to give a talk, but I was still able to present online. The other conferences were for the Japan Association of Religion and Ethics, and although they were hosted domestically they also had attendance restrictions and had to be conducted online. This made the costs for the whole research project significantly less than they would have been with travel.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

Better ontological comprehension of the reforms that Jesus sought and the place of those within Jewish systems of thought. Thus we further understand Christianity's relationship with Judaism. The conclusions are valuable for philosophy/phenomenology of religion, ethics, and interpersonal relations.
