Outline of Research at the Start

This research analyzes how macroeconomic uncertainty in the destination market affects foreign direct investment (FDI hereafter), and explores the possible mechanism of multinational enterprises’ (MNEs hereafter) adjustment. First, I will testify whether Japanese parent firms choose to stay or retreat from the invested foreign markets (extensive margin), when faced with uncertainty. Second, I will investigate how uncertainties cause Japanese MNEs to make subsequent adjustment (intensive margin), through the possible channels such as intra-firm trade, sourcing pattern or labor reallocation.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The current research mainly analyzes how macroeconomic uncertainty in the destination market affects foreign direct investment (FDI hereafter), and explores the possible mechanism of multinational enterprises' (MNEs hereafter) adjustment. In the past calender year,I mainly developed and refined the existing research topics, which was converted into 1 publication and 3 working papers.I also contributed to the chapter of the book edited by the Institute of Comparative Economic Studies, Hosei University. Besides,I participated in several international conferences to present the works.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

I came up with more working papers than I initially expected, which is ahead of the schedule. But I still had to cancel several research trips due to the post-impact of COVID and ever-increasing travel cost.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

One major plan in the incoming year is to present the works at various conferences and workshops, and exchange ideas with other scholars. Depending on the progress, I'm also considering submitting the 3 working papers to refereed journals. In the meantime, I will explore other possible topics as well.
