Outline of Research at the Start

This project investigates how conservative and nationalist groups in Japan and the United States have carried out activism reacting to campaigns from left-leaning groups that aim to alter the landscape of public memory through the creation, alteration, or removal of historical statues and monuments.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Research continued on the topics laid out in the research plan. New books and other documents were obtained for an expanded analysis of background literature. Fieldwork was conducted in the United States, which included gathering documents and conducting interviews with people. One publication was submitted but remains under peer review, with results not yet received. Progress was made towards the completion of another research paper, which is expected to be submitted in the next academic year.
