Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
This study positions video rental stores, which spread across Japan in the 1980s and 1990s, as a form of media infrastructure that supported audiovisual culture, and analyzes their emergence and development. Through the examination of trade and specialty magazines, it traces the process from the early stages to large-scale chain operations, including an analysis of TSUTAYA's adoption of POS systems and standardization strategies. The study also focuses on the role of “lists” that enabled users to navigate rental selections, conducting both case-based analysis and theoretical exploration. In preparation for book publication, it maps the genealogy of media infrastructure studies and develops a theoretical framework. These findings provide historical insight into the infrastructural foundations of today’s subscription-based streaming platforms.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
