Outline of Research at the Start

台風は多大な被害をもたらし、複合災害における最大の懸念材料の一つでもあり、精度の高い観測と予測を世界が望んでいる。現状では、台風強度推定は衛星写真から得られる雲パターンとの照合に頼っており、十分な精度で台風の動向を把握できず、10年以上にわたって大きな改善が見られない。その一因は、直接観測にかかるコストや労力の大きさや技術的困難、また、台風強度に影響する海水面温度や海上風速を広域で観測する手段がないことにある。本研究では、超小型衛星と雷放電観測網を組み合わせた、これまでに例のない超高精度の台風監視と予測を行うための観測システムを低コストで実用化する手段に見通しをつける。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では、超小型衛星と雷放電測網を組み合わせた、これまでに例のない超高精度の台風監視と予測を行うための観測システムを低コストで実現する手段に見通しをつけることを目的としている。2023年度は、50kg級超小型衛星DIWATA-2を運用して、7月から10月までにのべ計13日のオンディマンド運用のキャンペーン観測を実施し、そのうち台風は3個について合計9日にわたって観測を行った。また2021年の台風16号について4日間にわたってほぼ連続して中心部の3D形状を推定することに成功した。 8月には、東京において雲の地上-衛星同時観測と水蒸気観測を実施した。2022年度の南極昭和基地で恒星を分光観測したデータを解析に基づき、衛星を用いた水蒸気のカラム量の試験観測を実施、解析を行った。雷放電を用いた研究としては、2018年から2020年にかけて発生した台風から36事例を選出し,大気再解析データを用いて台風周辺部から台風の壁雲に向かう風速と,台風壁雲に達する到達時間に関する経験式を導出した。さらに,台風中心から半径500kmの範囲で発生した雷の数を,雷発生位置と到達時間に応じて未来の時間に再配分することで,雷数から台風強度(中心気圧と最大風速)の発達曲線を直前予測する手法を開発した。

Reason

衛星による雲の3D観測を順調に実施し、データを蓄積している。これまでに取得されたデータの解析から、台風中心部の日毎の幾何学的構造変化をとらえることに世界で初めて成功した。海上の水蒸気量の衛星観測はこれまでは主にマイクロ波で行われてきたが、それが比較的単純な光学観測で可能なことを示した。このことは、今後安価な衛星による水蒸気の多点観測で、現在困難とされる台風や線状降水帯の発生予測を行うことに道を開いたと考えている。また台風内で発生する雷の観測から、台風の発生と定量的強度予測の端緒を掴んでいる。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

引き続き、超小型衛星による台風および関連気象現象のオンディマンド観測とその解析を継続して、データの蓄積を進め、その3D解析などを進める。台風の中心構造と気圧などの関係を定量的に明らかにする。2023年度に開発した、衛星光学観測に基づいた海上の水蒸気分布推定手法の検証、改良を進める。雷を用いた台風強度推定手法については、よりリードタイムの長い(1-2日)を実現すべく、解析方法の改良を行う。
