| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究では、人間の言語の特徴を、ヒトの生物としての特徴という視点から見ることで、新たな言語観と言語研究の手法の創出につなげようとするものである。これまでの言語変化の研究では、具体的な言語現象を分析し、そのパターンと変化が起きる条件を解明することを主軸としてきた。これに対し本研究では、伝達シグナルの異なる音声言語と手話言語という異なるモードの言語を対象とし、生理学的・生物学的な視点から言語現象を分析することで、言語に関する新たな知見を拓く。なお、ここでいう「手話言語」とは、音声言語を視覚化した対応手話ではなく、音声言語とは異なる独自の文法を持つ、ろうコミュニティーで使われる手話言語のことを指す。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
To explore the relationship between humans as biological beings and language, we examined spoken, sign, and tactile sign languages, investigating their characteristics. We also examined animal communication and the role of language in communication. Through related projects with other institutions in different fields, we deepened our understanding of human language. However, delving into the details of language change remained challenging and will be a focus for future research.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
科学的な視点から言語をとらえること、とくに音声言語と手話言語を対比し、類似性と異なる点を客観的に示したことは、言語に関わるあらゆる分野の研究者に対し、これまでもっていた「言語の本質」に関する視点が正しいものであったかどうか、問うものになったと考える。また、身体機能という視点から異なるモードでのコミュニケーションをとらえる視点、それが誰にでもあてはまるものであるという視点を提示することは、今後、コミュニケーション共生にむけた一般社会における行政や教育の在り方に問いを投げるものである。
