本研究は、古環境を精緻に記録する新しいアーカイヴ（古環境記録計）として、“目に見えない土の年輪”の有用性についてはじめて検証するものである。島根県中海やフィンランドケヴォ湖などの“ヘドロ”に着目して、目に見えない年縞認定および編年研究を行う。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this study, we examined the usefulness of "invisible annual stripes" as a new archive (paleoenvironmental recorder) to precisely record paleoenvironments. We collected undisturbed surface strata from dredged hollows in Nakamai Lagoon, Shimane Prefecture and Hachiro-gata Reservoir, Akita Prefecture, where non-visible annual stripes are likely to have been deposited over the past 200 years. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the cores to construct a chronological model and to reconstruct the paleoenvironment.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究によって、一般的に“ヘドロ”と呼ばれる黒色有機泥に、当該水域の自然年表を作成できる季節～年解像度をもつ年縞の形成が確認されれば、精緻に復元できる場所や時代（時間）が著しく増大する。広く古環境学的研究分野において、“目に見えない土の年輪”が新しい古環境アーカイヴとしての有用性が証明されれば、これまで実施されている様々な環境プロキシを駆使して、さらなる地球環境史の解明につながるものである。
