| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究は、幕末・明治を生きた個々の国学者に視座を置くことで、その思想的背景を含めて19世紀における遺跡・遺物観の変容を明らかにするものである。
具体的には、埼玉の国学者である根岸武香（平田派）と井上淑蔭（江戸派）を取り上げ、彼らの書簡や著作を全国の所蔵機関にて調査する。現地で撮影した写真データを翻刻・分析し、①西洋考古学の知識と国学思想の相克、②歴史意識と遺跡・遺物観との関係、③草創期の近代アカデミズムとの関係の3点を解明する。そして、①～③における平田派と江戸派との間での共通点と相違点を明らかにする。これらの作業を通して、考古学史と歴史学、そして国学研究の成果を総合化することを目指す。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research examined and transcribed the letters and writings of Takeka Negishi and Yoshikage Inoue. It revealed that the perceptions of historic sites and objects by Kokugaku scholars was based on their understanding of Shinto texts and historical books, rather than that of material culture as in modern archaeology. Even after the Meiji period, when academic knowledge was updated with the spread of Western archaeology, this text-based understanding remained prevailing. Although Yoshikage was open to Western books and knowledge, they ultimately thought Western expertise could be traced back to ancient Japanese philosophy and thus should be encompassed in Kokugaku.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究は、江戸派をはじめとした国学の明治初期における地域的な展開の事例として近代への展望を示す成果となった。また、考古学・天文学を事例に西欧学知の受容実態を描き、既存の学問による規定性の強さを明瞭にした。個々人に視座を置き、思想的背景を含めて分析していくことで、諸分野の成果を総合化する方法を具体的に提示できたと考える。
さらに、草創期のアカデミズムの周辺で活動していた国学者の視座からアカデミズム史学の歴史叙述に関する諸研究を逆照射する成果でもあり、転換期にある現代の大学と社会との関係を問い直す手がかりとなるはずである。
