Outline of Research at the Start |
Little research exists demonstrating the extent to which motivational constructs predict actual L2 learners’ communicative output both in a general sense and in Japan. This large-scale empirical inquiry in the Japanese university English learning context investigates the extent to which willingness to communicate and other motivational constructs predict spoken L2 output in a group communicative English speaking task. This research answers the fundamental question of whether Japanese English learners’ reported motivation to communicate is associated with their observed English output.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
There were four major research outputs associated with this project. In September 2023, I published a validation paper for a speaking task self-efficacy instrument in RELC Journal (JIF = 3.0 - WoS and Scopus-indexed). In November 2023, I presented the results of the research at KoreaTESOL's National Conference. In March 2024, I joined colleagues at the 2024 American Association for Applied Linguistics conference to present research on individual differences, self determination theory, and language learning. Finally, I, along with internationally known co-authors, published the chief research findings in Language Learning (JIF = 4.4 - WoS and Scopus-indexed). Additionally, I have been selected to submit a follow-up research report to System in AY2024 (WoS and Scopus-indexed).

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
As this was a start-up grant, the two Scopus-/Web of Science-indexed papers funded by the grant show that the research has progressed more smoothly than expected. This grant has allowed me to collaborate with well-known researchers in Japan and abroad. What is more is that I have been invited to contribute papers based on the research supported by the grant in the future.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
There are three future plans during AY2024: a - submit an invited paper on the topic of individual differences and the lexical quality of group discussion task output; b - prepare a 'mini' learner corpus based on data collected during the research; and c - present on these findings at an international conference.
