Outline of Research at the Start

探査機はやぶさ2は、水と有機物を含むC型小惑星リュウグウから合計5.4 gの試料を採取し、地球に帰還した。2021年10月現在、複数の初期分析チームにより、回収試料の初期分析が行われている。本課題の目的は、リュウグウ初期分析を通じた国際共同研究を展開し、(1) 試料全体の化学的・同位体的特徴を明らかにして、(2) はやぶさ2計画の科学目標である太陽系の起源と進化を解明することである。初期分析終了後も国際共同研究を継続し、初期分析で特定したリュウグウ類似隕石の同位体分析、ならびにリュウグウ試料の国際公募分析を遂行し、地球や生命の起源に関する新たな知見の獲得を目指す。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

はやぶさ2初期分析の活動で得られたデータの論文化を集中的に行った。2023年11月には、研究代表者が筆頭著者となったCr-Ti同位体に関する論文がScience Advance誌に掲載された(Yokoyama et al., 2023)。これは、リュウグウにおける水質変成がプレソーラー粒子の選択的濃集を起こし、岩石全岩の核合成起源Cr同位体組成を変動させることを指摘した重要な論文である。また、本研究課題の海外研究協力者によるMo同位体およびSm-Nd同位体分析結果がそれぞれ国際誌GPLおよびMaPSに掲載され(Nakanishi et al., 2023; Torrano et al., 2023)た。Zr同位体分析の結果もMaPS誌に投稿され、掲載目前である。この他、コペンハーゲン大学によるMg同位体分析(Bizzarro et al., 2023)、パリシテ大学によるK同位体分析(Hu et al., 2024)もそれぞれ国際誌ApJL、Icarusに掲載された。
一方、研究代表者をPI、分担者2名をCo-Iとしたリュウグウ試料の国際公募(AO2)で配分された試料8点の分析も順次進めた。本課題の経費を用いて初年度に導入したICP-MSを用いて54元素の存在度分析を行ったところ、2次鉱物の不均質分布による元素存在度の大きな変動が確認された。また、水質変成を原因とするTi同位体組成の変動も、新たに発見された。これは、上記のYokoyama et al. (2023)論文では未発見の現象であり、今後論文化を進めていく。
この他、分担者2名はそれぞれ海外研究機関との共同研究を継続した。分担者の深井は本経費を用いて米国NASAを訪問し、OSIRIS-RExや将来の太陽系探査計画に関する議論を行った。

Reason

はやぶさ2初期分析において公表された論文は100本以上あるが、その中で研究代表者および分担者が筆頭著者あるいは共著となっている論文は20本以上にのぼる。これらのすべてが国際共同研究による成果であり、想定以上に進展しているだけでなく、本研究種目が目指す国際共同研究の加速・強化という目的を十分に果たしている。また、初期分析自体は2022年に終了したが、研究代表者はその後のはやぶさ2試料国際公募に合計4件、採択されており、分析を継続している。この採択数も当初の予想以上である。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

はやぶさ2国際公募AO2で配分された8試料の分析はほぼ終了したため、今後は得られたデータの解析を進めていく。まず、2024年8月にシカゴで行われる国際学会Goldschmidt Conferenceにおいて、研究成果を発表予定である。その後、解析結果と議論をまとめあげ、2024年度の末までには、国際誌に論文を投稿する計画である。
研究代表者の横山は、2023年6月、コペンハーゲン大学のMartin Bizzarro教授の研究室を訪問し、新たな共同研究について詳細な議論を行った。その議論を通じ、はやぶさ試料の更なる分析、特に初期分析で実施できなかったSi同位体の分析は必須であるとの結論に達した。そこで、国際公募分析(AO4)にBizzarro教授をPI、横山をCo-Iとして共同応募した結果、採択され、新たにSiおよびMg同位体分析を実施することとなった。2024年度はこの分析を共同で実施する。また、これとは別に、Bristol大学のKe Zhu博士をPI、横山をCo-Iとする計画もAO4に採択された。これはリュウグウ試料の段階的酸リーチングによるCrおよびTi同位体分析であり、横山をPIとするAO2の分析と相補的な研究となっており、今後、順次分析をすすめていく。
