Outline of Research at the Start

本研究代表者は、「はやぶさ2計画」の試料採取チーム(サンプラー)メンバーであり、小惑星リュウグウ試料帰還を成功させたメンバーの一人である。また、初期分析の有機分析グループメンバーとして、試料の初期分析(2021年6月開始)を担当しており、アメリカ航空宇宙局・ゴダード宇宙飛行センターの招聘研究員を兼務している。本国際共同研究の学術的独自性は、「はやぶさ2(日本)」および「オシリスレックス(米国)」(2023年帰還予定)計画を双方相乗的に最大化し、2つの太陽系始原天体での水ー有機物ー鉱物の相互作用の解明を含め、有機分子レベルの初生的な分子進化を読み解くことである。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

2023年度は、はやぶさ2探査機により地球帰還した小惑星リュウグウの可溶性有機物について初期分析の総括を行った。はやぶさ2初期分析SOMチームは、2つの試料(A0106とC0107)と1つの粒状サンプル(A0080)をいくつかの高感度・高分解能分析法を用いて調べた。元素分析の結果、炭素(C)、水素(H)、窒素(N)、酸素(O)、硫黄(S)の総含有量は、有機物、含水鉱物、炭酸塩、硫化物からなる揮発性軽元素に富んでおり、最大で~23.7 wt%と評価した。有機溶媒抽出物からは、数多くの有機分子が同定された。フーリエ変換イオンサイクロトロン/質量分析計を用いて、メタノール抽出液中のC、H、N、O、Sからなる分子組成について、約20,000の分子を帰属した。この分子分布は、母体の低温水性変質を示唆している。水抽出物中には、グリシン、アラニンなどのタンパク性のものと、β-アラニン、α-アミノ酪酸、ノルバリン、イソバリンなどの非タンパク性のものを含む合計20種類のアミノ酸が同定された。非対称炭素を持つアミノ酸の光学異性体はラセミ体として存在した。核酸塩基の1つであるウラシルは、イミダゾールカルボン酸のような構造異性体とともに同定された。メチルアミンなどの低分子アミンや酢酸などのカルボン酸も水抽出物から検出され、これらの遊離アミンやカルボン酸は揮発性が高いため、リュウグウ表面に有機塩として保持されることを示した。有機溶媒抽出物からは、アルキルベンゼン、ナフタレン、フェナントレンなどの多環芳香族炭化水素(PAHs)が検出された。ピレンとフルオランテンの存在量の違いは、それらの溶解度の違いによるもので、母天体での水質変成を示唆していると考えられる。ナフタレン、フルオランテン、ピレンの 13C 同位体濃縮は、星間物質中の極低温反応(~ 10K)による生成機構を示している。

研究成果に示すように、順調に計画を進展させている。
国際共同研究をさらに推進するために、NASAのOSIRIS-REx(オサイリス・レックス)ミッションの有機分析チーム統括のダニエル・グラビン主幹研究員(NASA/GSFC)とエリック・パーカー研究員(NASA/GSFC)をJAMSTEC横須賀本部に招聘し、研究交流を深めた。OSIRIS-RExは、小惑星ベンヌ(Bennu)からサンプルを収集して地球に持ち帰ることを目的とした探査ミッション(OSIRIS-REx:Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorerの略)であり、サンプルカプセルは、2023年9月に地球帰還を達成した。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

OSIRIS-REx(オサイリス・レックス)の地球帰還後のサンプルプロセスは、NASAジョンソン宇宙センターのクリーンルームで開封され、初期記載が慎重に行われている。今後、サンプルの化学組成、鉱物組成、有機物の存在などの調査解析が進められる予定である。正確な化学情報を取得することで、太陽系の起源と進化に関する理解を深める手がかりとなる。また、サンプルの保有する物理的特性を調べることにより、小惑星ベヌーの初生的な形成過程、衝突履歴、表面のダイナミクスなどについて明らかになると考えられる。それらの上で、ミッションの目的である、# Origins(起源): 太陽系の起源と進化を理解する、# Spectral Interpretation(スペクトル解析): 小惑星の表面の物質を詳細に分析する、# Resource Identification(資源識別): 将来の資源利用のために、小惑星に存在する資源性を評価する、# Security(安全): 地球に衝突する可能性のある小惑星を研究し、衝突リスクを評価する、# Regolith Explorer(レゴリス探査): 小惑星の表面の粒子試料(レゴリス)を直接探査するために、包括的な調査研究を行う予定である。
