Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
In this study, we conducted research into the tuberculosis infection and ecology of Asian elephants and three species of bear including sloth bears, black bears and brown bears, all of which are endangered in the wild in Nepal, respectively. Firstly, with regard to tuberculosis infection in Asian elephants, we performed post-mortem examinations on nine captive Asian elephants that died between 2019 and 2022. We cultured lung lesions to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA using the LAMP and PCR methods and identified tuberculosis in six and five out of the nine animals, respectively. Secondly, in a study on the ecology of the three bear species, we used a model to predict their future distribution in the lowlands, central hills and high mountains of Nepal based on habitat location and environmental data for each species.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
