Outline of Research at the Start

We aim to elucidate the mechanisms of muscle strain injuries and the development of effective injury prevention and rehabilitation strategies for optimizing athletic performance. A comprehensive multilevel approach is taken combining musculoskeletal anatomy, neuromuscular mechanics, physiology and engineering and employ studies in animals and humans. The project will be carried out mainly through onsite and in-person collaborations among the above members, through the visit of Japanese researchers including the Principal Investigator to the overseas partners.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

スポーツ活動において頻発する傷害である肉離れの好発部位は大腿部後面に存在するハムストリングスである。これらの筋群の筋損傷の機序を探るために、国内外の複数大学でチームを構成し、研究期間を通じて国際的な共同研究組織体制を構築し、研究活動を行うという計画を引き続き遂行した。2023年度は、肉離れの発生機序に関して、運動中の下肢筋群のメカニクスの観点からの検討が深化し、骨格筋の三次元的な筋束・腱組織形状の詳細検討が進展し、他の周辺領域との意見交換を活発化することができた。最後の点については、バイオメカニクスの分野での大きな国際会議が日本国内で開催されたことから、海外からの研究者が数多く来日し、対面での研究打合せの機会を多くもつことができた。また、これまでの研究成果を発表・討議する機会も増やすことができた。
具体的な研究実績として、ハムストリングスのうち、肉離れが頻発する大腿二頭筋長頭の筋内腱膜の「ねじれ」構造や、腱膜の微細構造に関する前年度の知見を国際会議(査読付)や国際シンポジウムにおいて発表し、深く議論する機会をもった。さらに、肉離れが頻発するスポーツである短距離走を中心にしたテーマで選手やコーチ、研究者が集った国内会議において、下肢筋群の「バネ」特性と肉離れとの関連性についての知見や考察を本研究の研究代表者・分担者・協力者が発表し、参加者との議論や、パフォーマンスの向上や傷害予防の上で有効となり得るトレーニング方法についてのアイデアの交換を行うことができた。このことは本研究のゴールのひとつである「肉離れの予防や再発防止のための効果的なトレーニング・リハビリテーション方略の開発」に向けて有意義な実績となったものと考えられる。

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

2023年度は、新型コロナウイルスのパンデミック下で設定されていた行動制限が大幅に取り除かれ、研究協力者との対面交流や共同研究が前年度をさらに上回る程度に進展した。博士後期課程に所属し、研究協力者として本研究を中心的に担っている留学生がようやく入国できた2022年度以降、日本での活動に慣れてきて、実験や討議を本格的に進めることができたことも、研究が順調に進む原動力になった。一方で、日本において開催された国際会議のために研究協力者を含む海外からの多数の研究者が来日し、対面交流を進めるなかで、研究代表者や協力者が新型コロナウイルスに罹患し、その後数ヶ月に及ぶ後遺症に悩むこととなり、十分な活動が進まない点もあった。
研究成果の蓄積・公開は進んだものの、上記のこともあり期待以上のものとはならなかったことから、これらの点を勘案して「おおむね順調に進展している」と自己評価した。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

2024年度については、引き続き国際会議において上述の研究発表を行い、その議論をもとに学術誌に研究論文を投稿しつつ、前年度までに蓄積した手法を応用しながら、さらに研究を深化させる。研究を中心的に担っている研究協力者の大学院生は2024年度より活動拠点をオランダを中心としたヨーロッパに移し、生活を開始したところである。秋には研究代表者が比較的長期にわたってオランダの研究協力者(上記研究協力者との共同研究を遂行)や、共同活動の展開を予定している他国の研究協力者のもとに出張する予定であり、人間の解剖体を対象とした実験や、スポーツ競技における筋損傷の発生についての調査研究を行うことを計画している。日本国内におけるスポーツ競技への応用研究と合わせつつ、最終年度として研究を加速・完結する予定である。
