Outline of Research at the Start

The study addresses gender and rural-urban learning inequalities in francophone sub-Saharan Africa and employs a mixed-method approach. The quantitative study covers ten countries using longitudinal RIF decomposition and the qualitative one three countries (Burkina Faso, Togo, and Cameroon).

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The current research started before the researcher traveled abroad. Once abroad, after improving the research design and doing further quantitative analysis based on work in Japan and early work in Burkina Faso, part of the findings have been compiled and included in a book. The manuscript of this book was submitted to Kakenhi to apply for the grant for publishing academic books. Moreover, the findings were presented at two conferences. The first one was at the Japanese Society for African Education Research, in Japan, by the principal researcher. The second one was at an international conference in Bamako, Mali, by the principal investigator and the co-investigator from Burkina Faso. The overall findings are being compiled and will be submitted to an academic journal for publication.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

The research was delayed due to administrative difficulties we encountered in the field research in Togo. The administrative procedure to get an authorization for field research took longer than expected, a specificity of the country. Moreover, convincing the local team to assist us was a challenge because the research did not have funds to pay up to the expectations of the Togolese team. Furthermore, the depreciation of the Japanese Yen reduced the budget substantially and obliged adjustments that were very challenging.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The plans for the research scheme is to finalize the report of the findings. Once this is done, we will draft an academic article on based on the report, and we will submit to a journal for publication. With availability of funds, we will disseminate findings through other channels.
