Research Abstract |
The present study evaluated genetic impacts of aquaculture and hatchery-supplementation on wild populations. We found that the Chinese clam, an alien species, hashybridized with the native asari clam and that hybrids now represent ~50% of the clam population in theAriake Sea. We showed that hatchery fish had low genetic diversity and displaced wild fish whenstocking exceeded the food supply. We also found evidence of low genetic diversity and morphologicalchanges in cultured red sea bream due to selection of fast growing individuals for many generations.Relative reproductive success of the steelhead largely varied due to different crosses and environmentalconditions. To elucidate the mechanisms of the fitness reduction, we developed a directed graphicalmodeling of gene expression profiles and phenotypic traits.
