Research Abstract |
New cold-adapted microorganisms were isolated from cold environments, and biochemical and biotechnological studies on cold-adapted microorganisms were performed for development of new low-temperature bioprocesses. In particular, a genetic engineering method to modify the genome of Shewanella livingstonensis Ac10, a cold-adapted bacterium isolated from Antarctic seawater, was established for its molecular breeding. Eicosapentaenoic acid, which is beneficial to human health, was found to be produced by this strain, and the mechanism of its biosynthesis was elucidated. In addition, the strain was shown to reduce various metal ions, and a protein involved in this process was identified for metal biotechnological application of this strain.
