Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research aimed to better understand the attitudes and behaviors of residents toward brown bears and brown bear management in Sapporo. The authors conducted mail surveys among the residents of Sapporo in 2012 and 2014. The results showed some unchanged tendencies such that more people tolerate bear habitation outside the human residential areas, and that about half the residents take some kinds of precautions against bears. The results also showed some changes such that more people than ever want the municipality to help people take precautions and/or to introduce compensasion programs, and that the residents of the areas without bears tolerate less than ever bear habitation outside the human residential areas.
