Research Abstract |
Generally speaking studies on Emerson's thought have been conducted concerning its development of Transcendentalism in his younger and middle age. It has been considered that Emerson in his later years became a thinker who could not keep up with the rapid change of the American society afterthe Civil War. In this research project, the whole aspect of Emerson's thought is attempted to be examinedthrough the investigation of his thought in his later years from the four viewpoints: his idea of nature and human ethics, the relation to Pragmatism, the resemblance with Nietzsche's thought, and his partici-pation in the American society after the Civil War.
