Research Abstract |
It has been debated in the field of theoretical linguistics (most notably in generative grammar) whether nominal arguments have similar or distinct syntactic realizations cross-linguistically. This study aimed to contribute to this important issue through the investigation of the left/right periphery of the nominal argument in classifier languages such as Japanese and Chinese. As a result of the investigation, we came to the conclusion that nominal arguments in those classifier languages do project (optional) functional structures on top of the lexical domain (i.e., NP). This in turn led us to the view that the so-called Nominal Mapping Parameter cannot be maintained in its strongest form.
