Research Abstract |
The results of research in Indonesia reveal that households as economic units have become more important while clans have become socially less significant than in the 1980s. Some household heads fully utilize their resources and social networks, including kinship and friendship, so that their children can acquire a higher education. This is an example of their survival strategies in Sumba. A different strategy is employed in impoverished areas in Karawang to increase household income. Many women go overseas as migrant workers. To support their daughters, grandmothers generally foster their grandchildren left at home.
