Research Abstract |
A new formluation of quantum statistical mechanics has been constructed. In this formulation, all quantities of statistical-mechanicanical interest are obtained from a single pure quantum state. This enables one to analyze quantum systyems that are hard to analyze by the conventional methods. Universal properties of nonlinear response functions of pump-driven non-equilibrium systems have been found. In particular, sum rules for the nonlinear response functions are shown to hold regorously. This enables one to analyze pump-probe experiments without resort to approximations.
