Research Abstract

本研究の目的は、銀河系外からやって来て可視光波長帯で観測される全ての光の総和である「可視光銀河系外背景放射」(Cosmic Optical Background; COB) の世界初検出である。当該年度にはまず、本研究期間中の平成23年度に達成した「惑星探査機パイオニア10/11号のデータによるCOB検出」についてさらに検討と議論を進め、国際学会、欧米学術誌などにおいて精力的に成果の発表を行った。また、銀河間空間に浮かぶ暗黒星雲の巨大版とも言うべき「暗黒銀河」HI 1225+01を対象とし、ニュージーランドのMOA-II 1.8m望遠鏡を用いて観測したデータの解析を行った。その結果、残念ながらこの暗黒銀河によるCOB遮蔽効果の検出には至らなかった。その原因と改善の方策を探るため、HI 1225+01の性質を詳細に探るフォローアップ研究を行った。MOA-IIで観測した可視光Rバンド画像の他に、Sloan Digital Sky Surveyの可視光５バンド、UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey の近赤外線4バンド、Spitzer IRACおよびMIPSの赤外線7バンドの測光データをアーカイブから取得し、銀河モデルが予測するスペクトルモデルとの比較を行ったところ、HI 1225+01は非常に若くかつ熱いダスト成分を持つ銀河であり、blue compact dwarf galaxyと呼ばれる種族に良く似た性質を持つことが解明された。COB遮蔽が検出されなかったのは、おそらく可視光で十分な減光を起こすだけのダストがこの銀河に不足していたためと考えられる。この結果について欧米学術誌上で発表を行った。さらにCOBに寄与する個々の天体構成について調査を進めるべく、岡山観測所188cm望遠鏡の近赤外線撮像分光装置ISLEを用いて観測キャンペーンを行い、多数の活動銀河核のスペクトルを取得した。解析作業には予想外の時間がかかり、このデータについては現在も鋭意解析を行っているところである。
