液体のように振舞うナノ粒子:宇宙ダスト類似物の生成過程を観る“その場"観察実験

Research Abstract

惑星系の形成過程に伴う物質進化過程の解明という地球惑星科学の第一級の課題に対して、宇宙固体微粒子(宇宙ダスト)の形成や結晶化過程を実験的に解明する。宇宙ダストは容器の無い宇宙空間で生成する為に、大きな過冷却度がついた後に生成することが容易に想像できる。特に、気相からの凝縮実験(煙の実験)において非接触で生成するナノ粒子の成長過程を干渉計を用いてその場観察することで、気相中でのナノ粒子生成時の核形成温度(過冷却度)や成長速度などを定量化することが目的である。ここで、ナノ粒子の"液体のような"非常に早い拡散現象が鍵になると考えている。物質科学と地球惑星科学分野との境界領域に新たな研究分野を形成する研究課題になる。
初年度に組んだ、2波長マッハツェンダー干渉計を用いて、核形成温度と濃度を同時に測定することに成功した。また、凝縮温度と生成粒子のサイズを同時に説明可能なナノ粒子の"実効的な"表面張力と吸着係数を、核生成理論を用いることで同時に決定できることが明らかになり、当初の想定以上の成果を挙げられた。例えば、マンガンに関しては、表面エネルギーはナノ粒子であっても、バルクと同程度の値で、吸着係数は約0.4であった。さらに、ナノ粒子の融点降下や拡散速度の特異現象により液滴状融合成長が頻繁に起こることで核の数を減らす現象を定量的に示した。これにより、実際に宇宙ダストが生成する温度、そのサイズ、数密度などを核生成理論から予測可能になると期待される。
