Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study compared the roles music played in social movements and cultural diplomacy in the U.S. during the Cold War. It analyzed the ways in which musicians, government officers, activists, and critics interpreted the meanings of music and negotiated the conflicting views of the U.S. while American musicians were performing and sending messages abroad. My research also revealed how their music and messages were perceived overseas, with a particular emphasis on the Japanese reception of American folk singers.
