Research Abstract |
Children and childhood education are believed to be keys to our society. The sociological concept of "socialization" also uses this belief as its theoretical assumption. However, is this image of children a self-evident truth? I rethought the predominant discourse--by analyzing other discourses--to contribute to both sociology and child studies. In the first three years of this research period, I read the proceedings of the enactment of certain juvenile protection laws--such as the Factory Act, Juvenile Act, and Act for Prohibiting Minors from Drinking in prewar Japan--to find images of the youth that were different from the prevalent ones mentioned above and that were reflected in the educational system in the same period. In the final year, I attempted to draw a different picture of children and society to challenge our common conceptions as well as the dominant academic assumption by conceiving a suitable framework through examining theories on discourse analysis and child studies.
