Research Abstract |
The main objective of this study is an analysis of Graaf-Reinet, an inner colonial city in South Africa and its spatial formation of racial segregation. The central part of the town maintains a grid pattern since the beginning of the eighteenth century, when the town was newly laid out and had many colonial style houses. On the other hand, barracks were built up in a black area formed at the peripheral of the white area. In the black area, some blocks which were affected by the apartheid policy are faced with a crisis of clearance. In future, an effective conservation plan that covers both white and black areas is required.
