本研究は、近世期の国際商業都市に代表される「グローバル多元主義社会」と近世国家の採用した「地域大国主義」の相克の中で，改宗や移住を余儀なくされた個人と，宗教的に先鋭化する国家や社会とのせめぎ合いを解明し，とりわけ17世紀後半以降19世紀に至る近世社会の変容を問う。「宗教アイデンティティ」という新たな分析軸から，ユーラシア全域を俯瞰した新たなグローバル・ヒストリーの視座と，実証的に裏付けられた各地の近世像を統合した新たな近世史像の提示を目指すものである。

２年目となる2023年度には、7月にライデン大学（オランダ）で開催された国際学会The Seventh European Congress on World and Global History (ENIUGH 2023)にて、本研究課題によるパネル・セッション"Religious and Social Identity in Transition: Conflict, Conciliation and Coexistence in Early Modern Asia"を企画した。同パネルでは、研究代表者の守川、研究分担者の岡・島田・冨澤・弘末の計5名のほか、A. Singh、P. Carioti、P. van der Veerが、近世期のアジアの各地域社会（日本、イラン、台湾、インドネシア、インド、インド洋海域、中国）における社会レベルおよび個人レベルにおける宗教的アイデンティティとその変容を問う報告を行い、コメンテーターのM. Bernardiniのもと、全体討論を行った。
また、2024年1月には、東京大学にて国際研究集会"Tolerance and Intolerance in the Early Modern World"を2日間にわたって開催した。ここでは研究代表者の守川、研究分担者の坂野・濱本に加えて、大学院生を含む新進気鋭の若手研究者5名と、A. Brogini、M. Talbot、K. Kostikyanら海外からの招聘研究者3名が報告し、およそ30名の参加者らを交えて、近世世界の「宗教的不寛容」について議論した。
これら２つの国際学会パネルと国際研究集会の成果は、英文論文集 Source of Intolerance: Perceptions and Practices（仮）として書籍化を目指す。

国際学会でのパネル・セッション企画と、東京大学での国際研究集会の開催により、海外の研究者らと濃密な意見交換が可能となった。これらの成果報告とディスカッションを通して、本共同研究の新たな方向性が定まったため。
