Outline of Research at the Start

近年量子磁性科学において二つの新しい扉が開かれた。一つは量子磁性体における磁気準粒子の対称性・外場による分類・制御提案であり、もう一つは量子状態を特徴づける量子もつれ(エンタングルメント)の定量指標観測提案である。これら量子磁性科学における新しい可能性の開拓には高精度な中性子散乱が必須である。そこで、2021年に再稼働を果たした我が国の研究用原子炉JRR-3において、量子磁性研究に必須な高精度中性子散乱を実現する。これに電磁波分光および理論解析を組み合わせ、磁気準粒子制御と量子もつれ定量評価の学理を構築することで、新しい量子磁性科学を開拓する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

磁気対称性決定のためには高効率で広い波数空間の中性子回折パターンを一度に取得できる大型位置敏感型二次元中性子検出器が必須であるとの初年度の詳細検討結果のもと、2022年度、2023年度に引き続き位置敏感型検出器の開発に注力した。2024年度においては検出器電子回路およびソフトウェアの開発を完了し、複数の単結晶試料の回折データを超高効率に精度良く取得することに成功した。中でも大サイズテスト試料であるMnSi単結晶(1cc強)では30分程度で十分な数の回折強度が取得できるなど、その効果は絶大であることが確認された。また通常の回折装置を用いた磁気構造決定も継続して行なっており、2024年度においては中性子回折とSQUIDを用いた電気磁気効果測定を併用することで、低次元量子磁性体 Cu2(MoO4)(SeO3)の磁気構造と電気磁気効果の関連を明らかにした。特に、中性子回折だけでは区別がつきにくい磁気空間群に関して、SQUIDを用いた超高感度電気磁気効果測定から結論を下すというアプローチに興味が持たれ、本結果はPhys. Rev. B にEditor’s suggestionとして掲載された。他にも高温マルチフェロイックに関する成果や、反強磁性体に対する多極子の観点からの対称性分類が飛躍的に進展するなど、実験・理論の両面からの成果が創出された。

Reason

2022年度、2023年度に引き続き大型位置敏感型検出の開発の全力を投入し、世界的にも珍しいサイズの湾曲中性子検出器の開発とそれを用いた結晶構造解析データ取得に成功した。さらに予備的な結晶構造解析にも成功している。加えて、従来型の回折装置を用いた磁気対称性決定に関しても順調に進んでおり、Cu2(MoO4)(SeO3)に代表される種々の量子磁性体の磁気対称性研究が進展した。これらのことから研究は順調に進展していると言える。他方、近年の話題としてスピン群対称操作によって特徴付けられる新しい磁気秩序「オルターマグネット」が大きな注目を集めている。当初の我々の研究目的が磁気対称性を元に磁気励起を理解・制御することであることからも、我々の研究は「オルターマグネット」研究と非常に関連が強い。この様なスピン群操作で特徴づけられる物質群の磁気励起に関する検討も始めておりその意味でも研究は広がりを見せながら順調に進んでいる。他方、この様な研究グループ内外の新たな動きに対応するため量子もつれ観測に関しては成果は限定的であるが、2024年度内に候補物質の検討等が進み2025年度にはこの方向にも大きな成果が得られると期待している。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

中性子散乱に関しては開発に成功した大型位置敏感型検出器を用いた磁気回折データ取得のための試料環境装置整備を進める。特に低バックグラウンドの冷凍機は良質なデータ取得のための鍵でありこの方向に注力する。同時に大型位置敏感検出機を用いた高効率な磁気対称性決定のためのアルゴリズム開発等の研究も開始する。現実の物質群の研究に関しては、中性子回折から決定される対称性から特徴的(例えばスピン分裂)磁気準粒子分散やその外場制御可能性を有する物質群を発見する。対称性の中でもこれまであまり検討されてこなかったスピン群対称性を念頭に準粒子分散に関する検討を進める。また、電場、圧力等の外場による磁気準粒子分散制御に関しては、昨年度に引き続き外場下帯磁率測定をさらに進め、まずはバルク磁性体における磁性制御の詳細を確認する。電磁波分光に関しては、結晶が空間反転対称性を持たない磁性体に磁場を加えて時間反転対称性を破ることで生じる新規な非相反光応答を探索する。理論研究に関しては、マグノンと他の準粒子の結合を利用した新しい複合準粒子励起の理論解析を行う。特に、マグノン-フォノン結合に着目することで、非相反マグノン由来の非相反フォノン励起を記述する微視的模型の構築を行う。また、非相反フォノン励起を実現するために重要な微視的要素を磁気対称性の観点から考察する。
