Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では『強磁場領域で既存の枠組みを超える新奇量子相の開拓』を目指す。この目標達成のため、安定化超ロングパルス磁場という最先端の技術を用い、ゼーマンエネルギーが支配的となりえる『50テスラ級強磁場』で中性子回折、核磁気共鳴そして熱伝導・熱ホール測定といった先端的測定技術を強磁場で利用可能とさせる。これによりSrCu2(BO3)2やSrFeO3そしてYbB12など多岐に渡る物質群で、強磁場量子相のミクロなスピン状態およびその準粒子励起を観測する。これらの研究を通して『強磁場極限近傍でどのような新奇量子相が生まれ、どのような機能性が発現するであろうか?』という学術的問いに挑む。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究の最終的な目標は,『強磁場領域における新奇量子相の発見とその機能性の解明』である.2022年度末までの成果として,1.世界初のパルス磁場下でのラウエ中性子回折に成功,2.パルス磁場下でのスピン・格子緩和時間およびスピン・スピン緩和時間測定の両方に成功,3.パルス磁場下で初めてとなる熱伝導測定に成功した.2024年度当初の研究目標は,開発した技術をさらに発展させ,これと並行して主に局在スピン系における研究成果を取得することであり,それを受けて2023年度は以下の開発および研究を進めてきた.
1.の中性子回折については15Tまで拡張された磁場範囲を活用し,局在スピン系のCuFe1-xGaxO2においてラウエ中性子回折実験を進めた.その結果として掲載年は2024年度となるものの,Phys. Rev. Research誌に本成果を発表した.また目標未達成の実験ではあるが,異なる局在スピン系サンプルにおいて,パルス磁場下中性子回折実験を試みた.
2の核磁気共鳴については,興味あるサンプルについてパルス磁場下核磁気共鳴測定を進めた.この成果については,執筆準備段階まで研究を進めることができた.また核磁気共鳴測定用ロングパルス磁場の開発を進めた.
3の熱伝導測定については,世界初となるパルス磁場下の熱伝導測定を論文にまとめRev. Sci. Instrum.誌に発表した.実験に必要なパルス磁場発生装置の刷新も行い,より強磁場に到達できる安定化超ロングパルス磁場環境を整備した.
以上のように計画2年目の目標であった,中性子回折,核磁気共鳴,熱伝導測定の開発は問題なく進み,局在スピン系サンプルにおいて実験結果を取得するなど,並行して幾つかの研究を進めた.特に装置開発の成果は,小濱・中島・井原が参加する研究会も主催した.2024年度に向けて,装置開発およびその応用研究を進行できている.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

2023年度は,技術開発と並行して局在スピン系の研究を進めることが研究課題であった.
中性子回折実験は技術開発の成果として,パルス磁場下における磁気ラウエパターンの測定について論文発表した(掲載年は2024年度).さらに開発していた15Tまでの実験環境を拡張すべく中性子回折用の磁場発生装置を改良した.磁場発生における安全性の調査を進める必要はあるが,これにより既に20T以上の磁場発生に成功した.このような技術開発に並行して,局在スピン系の研究も進め,新奇サンプルにおける中性子回折実験もトライした.
パルス磁場下核磁気共鳴実験については,1秒程度の長時間パルス(ロングパルス)を使った核スピンの緩和現象の測定を試み,シグナル検出にも成功した.しかし通常のロングパルスでは,繰り返し磁場が発生できないため,シグナルの高精度化が困難であることが認識できた.この改善を目指し,新しいロングパルス磁石とクライオスタット組み立て始めた.このような技術開発を進めつつも,Pb(TiO)Cu4(PO4)4などの局在スピン系について実験を成功させ,論文執筆段階まで進むことができた.
パルス磁場下での熱伝導測定では,パルス磁場下で世界初となる熱伝導測定について論文発表した.これについては別に解説記事も執筆した.さらに次年度以降の測定環境の整備を目指し,40テスラ以上発生できる新型電源の調整を行った.特に磁場強度を高度に安定化したロングパルス磁場発生に成功した.これらの新しいパルス磁場発生技術を用いた量子スピン系サンプルにおける熱伝導測定は現在進行中である.
このように2023年度はパルス磁場下中性子回折・核磁気共鳴・熱伝導測定の3つにおいて技術開発で大きな進展があり,さらに幾つかの局在スピン系の成果を取得している.このため2023年度の本課題は『おおむね順調に進展している』と評価した.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

2024年度におけるパルス磁場下中性子実験では,20T以上まで拡張した実験環境をJ-PARCにインストールすることを目標とする.この達成を目指し,まずは磁場発生の安全性に関わる実験を推し進める.その後,安全性を高めた20~25TシステムをJ-PARCに輸送し,そこで局在スピン系および遍歴電子系の中性子回折実験を進める.
パルス磁場下核磁気共鳴測定は,ロングパルス磁場での実験を進める予定であった.しかしロングパルス磁場では,実験データ積算に有利な高繰り返し磁場が発生できないことが判っている.この技術的なボトルネックを解決すべく,2023年度から引き続き2024年度も幾つかのデザインで新型クライオスタットや新型パルス磁石の建造し,それをテストする.このような技術開発と同時に主に量子スピン系で物性実験を進め,論文発表に値するデータを取得することを2024年度における研究目標とする.
パルス磁場下での熱伝導測定は,パルス磁場発生の為の電源刷新に伴い2023年度の実験が飛躍的に進まなかった.しかし新型電源を使った安定化パルス磁場の発生をテストし,これに無事成功した.これはより超強磁場における熱伝導測定が可能な実験環境を整備できたことを意味するため,2024年度は局在スピン系のみならずYbB12などの遍歴電子を有するサンプルについて実験を進める.これにより,強磁場熱伝導データを用いた研究成果の取得を,2024年度の目標とする.
また代表の小濱,分担の中島と井原の間での共同研究を加速し,さらに多くの関連する研究者への情報発信を狙い,2023年度にならって本研究成果を発表する研究会の主催を2024年度も予定している.
