Outline of Research at the Start

海溝に沈み込む前のプレートの海洋地殻を断ち切る正断層は、しばしば海溝型巨大地震と連動し、M8クラスの巨大地震と津波を引き起こす。本研究では海洋地質学、地震学、地球物理学、地球化学、資源工学の壁を超えた分野横断的アプローチにより、これまで日本海溝アウターライズの一部の断層破砕帯で指摘された大規模な流体循環が日本海溝アウターライズに広く分布しているかを調べ、流体循環の時空間スケールを明らかにする。さらに、大規模な流体循環がアウターライズ巨大地震に与える影響を解明する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

Through a cross-disciplinary approach that transcends the boundaries of marine geology, geophysics, and geochemistry, this study aimed to elucidate the large-scale fluid circulation in the outer rise of the Japan Trench. Analysis of seismic reflection data revealed that the mechanisms of normal fault-type earthquakes in this region are spatially heterogeneous, with a particularly high seismic risk associated with west-dipping faults. The detection of anomalous seismic wave attenuation indicated temporal changes in fracture development associated with fluid migration in the oceanic crust and upper mantle of the outer rise. Furthermore, anomalies in helium isotope ratios measured in pore water from seafloor sediments suggest that large-scale fluid circulation occurs along these fractures, connecting the ocean and the mantle.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

日本海溝アウターライズにおいて多数の大規模な正断層を同定し、それらの滑りやすさを示すスリップテンダンシーを計算することで、大規模アウターライズ地震の発生リスクを力学的観点から評価したのは、今回が初めてである。地震波の減衰特性に対するタイムラプス解析の結果、2011年の東北地方太平洋沖地震(M9.0)がアウターライズ断層の発達にも影響を及ぼしたことが明らかとなった。また、アウターライズ断層は大規模な流体循環の通路としても機能しており、今後、これらの断層の挙動をモニタリングする地球物理学的・地球化学的観測は、地震・津波に対する防災対策への貢献が期待される。
