Outline of Research at the Start

宇宙空間と極域大気が結合した系において,エネルギーの流入量と消費量の間に量的な不整合があることが,近年の汎地球的な計測によって明らかになっている.本研究では,このエネルギー収支における謎を解明するために,2023年から北欧において稼働する次世代大型大気レーダー EISCAT_3D の周辺に高空間解像度カメラを配備し,メソスケールオーロラの動態や背景物理量を3次元的に,かつ高速に観測できる統合観測システムを構築する.この拠点的観測によって極域大気の4次元センシングを実現し,宇宙から大気へのエネルギー伝達・散逸過程において,メソスケールオーロラが担っている役割を明らかにする.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

次世代大型大気レーダー EISCAT_3D の周辺に高解像度カメラを配備し,オーロラの動態を 3 次元的に,かつ高速に撮像できる多点観測システムを構築する.この観測を,EISCAT_3D による電離圏物理量の立体観測と融合し,光と電波による極域大気の 4 次元センシングを実現する.これにより,100 km 以下の空間スケールをもつ「メソスケールオーロラ」が宇宙から大気へのエネルギー伝達・散逸過程において果たしている役割を解明する.さらに,オーロラに伴う熱圏加熱,中間圏化学変化を再現する数値シミュレーションにより,メソスケールオーロラの発現が 極域大気に与える影響を定量的に評価する.レーダーの運用については,3 次元観測を行うためのパルスコード,1 本のビームについて電離圏物理量を正確に得るために必要となる積分時間の見積もり,多ビーム観測の最適化についての検討を行った.また,EISCAT_3D の観測からベクトル量としての電場を導出するための手法の開発を行った.さらに,主として窒素分子イオンによる発光(427.8 nm)を高い時空間分解能で撮像するためのシステムの試験観測を 2022 年 10 月に実施した.さらに,国立極地研究所の光学校正施設を利用して感度校正を行い,複数地点で得られたデータを感度のギャップなしに合成するための感度特性,およびフラットフィールディングに必要となる校正画像を取得した.2023 年 10 月にノルウェーのシーボトムに 1 式目の観測システムを設置した.機器の設置後,観測は良好に継続できており,ディスクリートオーロラおよび脈動オーロラのメソスケール構造を可視化することができている.また,すでに構築している EMCCD カメラによる観測データ,特に現行 EISCAT レーダーとの同時観測データの解析を進め,オーロラに伴う電子降下現象についての成果を得た.

Reason

2023 年 10 月にノルウェーのシーボトムに 1 式目の観測システムを設置し,機器の設置後,観測は良好に継続できており,ディスクリートオーロラおよび脈動オーロラのメソスケール構造を可視化することができている.また,すでに構築している EMCCD カメラによる観測データ,特に現行 EISCAT レーダーとの同時観測データの解析を進め,オーロラに伴う電子降下現象についての成果を得ることができている.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

2024 年以降,さらに 2 式の CMOS カメラを導入し,EISCAT_3D レーダーの視野の赤道側をカバーするための光学観測システムを 2 式開発する.この 2 式のカメラの試験を国内で実施し,うち 1 式を 2024 年度に設置する.2025 年度にさらに 1 式の光学観測システムの設置を行い,多地点からの高精細オーロラ観測を実現する.
