Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では、レーザーにより結晶化(核発生・結晶成長)を多段階で制御する手法を開発し、革新的な機能を有する有機結晶材料を創製することを目指している。具体的には、レーザーの物理作用(例:熱、電場など)を駆使し、結晶化プロセスにおける分子の凝集性や配列性を動的かつ厳密に制御する手法を開発する。さらに、結晶化が科学・産業のボトルネックである様々な有機材料を対象として、本結晶化制御手法の有効性を検証する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では、レーザーを用いて結晶化(核発生・結晶成長)を多段階で制御する手法を開発し、革新的な機能を有する結晶性材料を創製することを目指している。2023年度は、昨年度に整備を開始した実験解析系の更なる改善とともに、それを用いた様々な結晶化現象の制御などを遂行した。
まず結晶核発生について、様々な物質を用いて結晶化に最適なレーザーパラメータ(エネルギー、パルス時間幅、電場特性など)の系統的探索を行った。その結果、融液系である氷の結晶核発生をレーザーの単発照射のみで誘起できることを見出し、マイクロ秒・マイクロメートルスケールの世界最高精度でバルク水中からの氷の結晶核発生ダイナミクスを捉えることに成功した。本技術は氷結晶化の基礎メカニズムや、様々な有機・バイオ材料の最適冷凍条件の解明への応用が期待できるものであり、J Phys Chem Lett誌に論文が受理され、さらには読売新聞やNHKなどの各種メディアでも研究成果が報道された。
また核発生以外にも新しいターゲットとして、レーザーアブレーションにより有機電気光学材料の単結晶の種を作製できること(J Phys Chem C誌)、超短パルスレーザーが多形相転移の時空間トリガーとして活用できること(J Phys Chem Lett誌)などを見出し、それぞれ論文発表した。特に後者の成果は、従来の外部刺激法では困難である結晶内部からの多形相転移を高精度に誘導できるものであり、これによりアミノ結晶の表面と内部での多形相転移の速度が大幅に異なることを発見した。
さらに上記以下外にも、結晶表面のステップなどのナノ微細構造の超解像光干渉イメージング法の開発(J Phys Chem Lett誌)や、レーザートラッピングによる生体物質の新規操作法の開発(Science誌)など、様々な成果を挙げることができた。

Reason

2023年度に計画していたレーザー結晶化技術の更なる発展・応用に取り組み、結晶核発生、種結晶化、多形相転移など様々な結晶化現象の応用やその最適制御条件に関する重要な知見を得ることに成功した。またこれらに加えて結晶化現象の計測に必要な新規光干渉顕微法の開発や、レーザートラッピングによる新しい物質操作法の開発など、技術開発やその応用で当初想定以上の成果を得ることができ、多数の論文発表に至った。以上から本研究は当初の計画以上に進展しているといえる。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

今後もこれまでに構築した実験解析系や最適結晶化条件のノウハウを活用し、レーザーアブレーションやレーザートラッピング技術による様々な結晶化現象制御法の改良を進める。またこれら技術を活用し、分子クラスターの形成や結晶多形などの多段階の結晶化現象のメカニズムを調べる。さらに、様々な物質の結晶化制御を試み、研究分担者などとも協力しつつその物性評価も進める予定である。
