Outline of Research at the Start

福島原発事故によって福島に沈着したセシウムは,森林流域から流出しつつあるものの,河川水中の溶存態セシウム濃度は,チェルノブイリ影響河川よりも遙かに低いことがわかってきた。その理由として,渓流水と土壌,リター(落葉)との反応時間が長いほど,渓流水中のイオン総量(EC)が多いほどセシウムが溶脱しやすく,溶存態濃度が高くなる可能性が指摘されている。そこで,福島県の浪江地域において異なる地形勾配の調査流域を複数設け,斜面から河川,上流から下流へ流出するTravel timeとセシウム溶脱の関連性を把握する。そして,データ解析と現地観測より,河川中のCs-137濃度を推定する統合モデルを開発する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

After the Fukushima nuclear accident, dissolved radiocesium (Cs-137) concentrations in river waters draining forests were found to be more than two orders of magnitude lower than those in regions impacted by the Chernobyl accident. This difference is attributed to Fukushima’s steep terrain and abundant rainfall, resulting in short groundwater residence times, as well as distinct interactions of Cs with dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and stable Cs-133. In particular, high DOC concentrations in Europe promote radiocesium desorption, whereas in Fukushima, strong adsorption onto soil and clay minerals likely inhibits its release.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は、福島とチェルノブイリ事故により汚染された河川中における放射性セシウムの動態を比較し、地域ごとの地形・水質・化学組成の違いがセシウムの溶出に及ぼす影響を明らかにした点で学術的意義が高い。特に、DOCや133Csとの相互作用、粘土鉱物との結合強度など、溶存態セシウムの制御因子を多角的に定量評価した点は、放射性核種の移行メカニズムの理解に貢献する。社会的には、将来の原子力災害時における環境リスク評価や水資源の安全管理に資する知見を提供し、長期的な放射線防護対策の科学的基盤を強化するものである。
