Outline of Research at the Start

地球表層の炭素は,プレートの沈み込みによって地球内部へ持ち込まれる。マントル岩石は表層のCO2を固定することが知られてきたが,深部マントルとCO2流体の反応はよくわかっていない。本研究では,沈み込み帯のマントル岩体の炭酸塩化の実態を調査するとともに,浅部と深部に対応する条件でマントル岩石の炭酸塩化実験を行う。岩石―流体平衡の溶液化学を軸に,岩石の破壊と元素移動を伴うマントルへのCO2固定のメカニズムを明らかにする。その上で,沈み込み帯での炭素の循環機構を検討し,地球内部のCHO流体とプレート境界の地震活動をつなぐ現象モデルを提案したい。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

高圧変成帯などの天然試料の解析、マントルウェッジ条件の反応―変形実験と表層近傍での反応―透水実験、数値モデリングについて、それぞれ大きな進捗があり、論文化についても順調に進んでいる。
天然試料の解析:本年度は主に三波川帯の泥質片岩中の炭素物に着目し、塩基性片岩との境界で溶解・再沈殿が起こり、結晶化度が高くなっていることがわかった。このことは、沈み込む堆積物中の炭素がCO2流体の起源になっている可能性を示唆する。また、反応―変形実験で形成される滑石層や滑石脈の組織と富郷などでの岩体が類似していることがわかってきた。
室内実験:マントルウェッジ条件での地殻―マントル境界反応実験により、地殻の堆積物の種類(珪岩と泥質片岩)によってMgの移動量が変化し、それによりマントル岩石側の体積変化と破壊様式に大きな影響を与えることを見出した。また、CO2を入れた系での、蛇紋岩―珪岩境界での変形実験を実施し、短期間の反応では石英―マグネサイトができるために、交代作用による反応帯形成に伴い、ひずみ強化が起こることを見出した。これは、滑石ができる場合と対照的な結果であり、その形成の熱力学的、元素移動を含めた解析を進めている。反応―透水実験に関しては、新しい装置のテストとか終わり、不具合の原因も明らかになったため、次年度から本格的な実験を行う。
数値モデル:沈み込み帯の地化学モデリングに関しては、炭素を含めた堆積物が滑石層形成、およびマグネサイト+石英の岩石に与える影響について、温度構造のバリエーション、堆積物の種類、変質玄武岩の影響などについて系統的に調べた。その結果は、Nature Communicationsに出版され、大きな注目を集めている。反応―破壊―流体流動に関する離散要素法の数値モデルに関しては、位相幾何学の分野の方法を取り入れて、亀裂パターンの特徴量抽出に成功し、天然との比較を進めている。

Reason

天然の解析:解析:三波川帯の四国中央部の泥質片岩と塩基性片岩の境界部における炭質物のラマン分光および同位体分析を行い、境界において炭質物の結晶化度が非常に高くなり、炭素の溶脱と再沈澱が起こっていることが明らかとなった。これは、炭素流体の起源として、沈み込む堆積物からきたCO2であることを示唆する重要な成果である。
室内実験:マントルウェッジ条件での地殻―マントル境界反応実験では、境界を跨いだ精密な物質移動解析を行うことに成功し、地殻の堆積物の種類(珪岩と泥質片岩)によってMgの移動が変化し、それによりマントル岩石側の体積変化が支配されることを見出した。また、CO2系での、蛇紋岩―珪岩境界での変形実験を実施し、短期間の反応では石英―マグネサイトができるためにひずみ強化が起こることを見出し、断層強度の時間変化を引き起こす可能性を示唆した。キレート剤を用いたかんらん岩の溶解実験については、現在論文が査読中である。
数値モデル:沈み込み帯に沿った炭素を入れた系での地化学計算は、東北日本、西南日本のほかの沈み込み帯についても調べるとともに、変質玄武岩の脱水の影響、堆積物の種類の影響など、滑石の生成条件について系統的に調べた。この結果については、Nature Communications 誌に掲載された。離散要素法による反応―破壊―流体流動のシミュレーションについては、亀裂パターンの特徴量を抽出するために、位相幾何学の手法と主成分分析と組み合わせることにより、固体体積が増加する反応と減少する反応の違いを定量的に評価することに成功した。
現在、MgOを用いた反応誘起破壊に関してはリバイズ中、マントルウェッジの離散要素法のシミュレーションとキレート剤を用いた溶解実験については論文査読中であり、他にも論文投稿準備が進んでいる。以上のことから当初の計画と比べて、予想以上に進捗していると言える。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

現在までの研究成果の論文投稿を積極的に進める。地殻―マントル境界のH2O系での反応実験と樋口岩体の流体圧変化に関しては5月までに投稿するとともに、地殻―マントル境界のCO2-H2O系での反応実験と蛇紋岩の炭酸塩化による破壊に関する成果の論文化も早急に進める。
天然の蛇紋岩とCO2流体:汗見川地域の泥質片岩と塩基性片岩で観察された炭質物の溶解・再沈澱に関して他の岩相境界でも検討して、その普遍性について明らかにするとともに、その条件について検討する。四国中央部の猿田川の蛇紋岩体についてCO2-H2O流体に関連する交代作用と変形について解析を行い、地殻―マントル境界実験との比較検討を行う。交代作用で生成される含水鉱物(滑石、緑泥石)について水素と炭素についての同位体を測定しながら、流体の起源について考察する。
室内実験:マントルウェッジ条件での地殻―マントル境界での長時間の反応変形実験を行い、石英―マグネサイトから滑石―マグネサイトへ時間変化する際に、ひずみ強化から弱化へと遷移するところのメカニズムを検討する。表層近傍条件での反応―透水実験では、実験装置のテストが終わり、5月くらいには圧力平衡器の不具合も修理されるので、軸圧一定条件などにより、系統的に封圧を変化させて、MgOの加水膨張反応の速度に与える影響を検討する。キレート剤を用いた溶解実験では、メッシュ組織の発達した蛇紋岩での流路発達、浸透率増進について検討するとともに、効果的なCO2地下貯留の方法について検討する。
数値モデル:離散要素法によって生成される亀裂パターンと天然の亀裂パターンをパーシステントホモロジーなどの方法を用いて、類似度を検討することで、メカニズムについての考察を進める。
以上のことの統合しながら、沈み込み帯のCO2流体の発生とマントル炭酸塩化のメカニズムとバリエーションについての考察・検討を進める。
