Outline of Research at the Start

宇宙における超高エネルギー放射の起源は重大な謎である。その観測的困難に打ち勝つため建設された世界初の高エネルギー宇宙ニュートリノ望遠鏡IceCubeが宇宙ニュートリノ観測を確立し,ついに高エネルギーニュートリノ天文学が始まった。本研究ではIceCubeの感度を5倍以上向上させる次世代ニュートリノ望遠鏡IceCube-Gen2の製造を日本から先導する。また,現在建設中のPhase1検出器によりこれまで取得されたIceCubeデータ及びGen2検出器での系統誤差の大幅な削減を行い,それまで取得されている14年分のアイスキューブデータを高精度化し,粒子シャワー及びタウニュートリノ探査再解析を行う。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

千葉大学にクリーンブースを整備、浜松ホトニクスと開発した4インチPMTに安定してライトガイド機能を持つシリコンパッドの取り付けることに成功し、新型光検出器に使用するシリコンパッドの製造手法を確立した。本モデルでは半球につきそれぞれ9つのシリコンパッドをガラスとの間に空気が入らないように設置する必要がある。シリコンパッド設置後にシリコンを流し込みシリコンパッドをガラスに密着させるという手法を開発した。このため、シリコンパッドの長球耐圧ガラス容器への設置には、流し込んだシリコンの硬化が進む間中、圧力をかけ続けシリコンパッドをガラスに密着させておく必要がある。その手法を決定し製造過程を確認した。これらの手法を用いて、プロトタイプモデル半球を製造した。
また、IceCube-Gen2実験に向け、IceCube-Gen2実験テクニカルデザインレポートの大部分を完成させた。300ページを超える実験全体のレポートは三部にわかれており、日本グループが担当し本研究計画により推進している光検出器の章が含まれる第一部、二部までは完成している。なお、第三部はロジスティックスや建設についての記述となっており、2023年夏にコミュニティにオープンするよう、引き続きコラボレーション内での協議を進めている。
また、テクニカルレポート及びIceCube-Gen2感度研究に使われるIceCube-Gen2検出器によるニュートリノ事象及び背景事象シミュレーションの改良を開発を開始した。IceCube-Gen2 Phase1計画による系統誤差の削減にむけたシミュレーションの開発では特に読み出し電子回路の理解を精査した応答モデルを完成させた。新型光検出器D-Eggの性能、詳細な応答特性およびマスプロダクションで製造したD-Eggの平均的な特性を調べ論文として発表した。

Reason

本研究課題はIceCube-Gen2 Phase1アレイの建設とそこから得られるデータの解析、及び次世代望遠鏡IceCube-Gen2に向けた新型光検出器の開発及びその製造過程の確立を主眼としている。Phase-1アレイ建設に向けた整備は順調に進んでいる。特にD-Eggの較正は詳細な結果が得られておりその結果をまとめた論文を出版することができた。IceCube-Gen2 Phase1アレイに向けたsimulationのためのモデルづくりは進んでいるが、そのsimulationへの組み込みは今後の課題である。IceCube-Gen2に向けた新型光検出器の開発は、おおむね順調に進行している。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Phase1光検出器配列シミュレーションの開発を推進することが重要なフェーズとなっている。特にこれまでに確立した電子回路の応答モデルをシミュレーションに取り入れ、より現実に近いシミュレーションでの感度研究を推進する。IceCube-Gen2に向けた新型光検出器においては、2023年度にはこれまで製造したプロトタイプを使ったメカニカル試験及び製造モデルにより近いプロトタイプを製造しその性能が予想されたものと同等であるかの詳細な確認を行う。これらの研究から問題点を洗い出し、改善を施していく。
