Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では、宇宙最初期の銀河の光度や質量をつかさどる物理的要因を探るため、赤方偏移した遠赤外線原子輝線のミリ波・サブミリ波分光観測に注目し、前・宇宙再電離期(赤方偏移8-15、宇宙年齢6億年未満)の銀河の出現とその個数の変遷や物理的性質を追跡する。そのために、メキシコ大型ミリ波望遠鏡LMTと組み合わせることで北半球で最高感度を実現する、120-350 GHz帯受信機FINERを開発する。北半球のFINERと南半球のALMAを駆使し、全天に渡って未分光のまま残された前・宇宙再電離期の候補銀河を酸素O++ 88um及び炭素C+ 158um輝線で分光同定し、人類未踏の時代の銀河形成を開拓する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では、宇宙最初期の銀河の光度や質量をつかさどる物理的要因を探るため、赤方偏移した遠赤外線原子輝線のミリ波・サブミリ波分光観測に注目し、前・宇宙再電離期(赤方偏移8-15、宇宙年齢6億年未満)の銀河の出現とその個数の変遷や物理的性質を追跡する。そのために、メキシコ大型ミリ波望遠鏡LMTと組み合わせることで北半球で最高感度を実現する、120-350 GHz帯受信機FINERを開発する。北半球のFINERと南半球のALMAを駆使し、全天に渡って未分光のまま残された前・宇宙再電離期の候補銀河を酸素O++ 88um及び炭素C+ 158um輝線で分光同定し、人類未踏の時代の銀河形成を開拓する。
本年度は、当初計画に基づき、以下を実施した。
(1) 受信機FINERの開発:科学的要請を満たす仕様を策定するとともに、研究代表者・分担者6名を含む18名のFINER開発・科学検討グループを組織し、LMT観測所への装置開発提案を行った。科学検討では、銀河形成分野だけでなく、惑星科学や星間化学・星形成分野など、幅広いサイエンス・ケースを検討し、ユーザー層の拡大を図った。この仕様を実現するシステム設計を行った。設計に基づき、超伝導SIS受信機の冷却系、及び高周波バンドミキサ・導波管部品の製作、デジタル分光計の試作と評価、光学系の検討を行った。
(2) 銀河分光探査:主にALMAを用いた再電離期の銀河分光観測を推進するとともに、新たな展開としてJWST宇宙望遠鏡を用いた(面)分光観測による研究に着手した。宇宙再電離中期~前期(z ~ 7-9)のALMAやJWSTによる低温ダストや電離ガスなどの複数の「相」にある星間物質や恒星の分布、星間物質の物理状態や力学状態を捉えるなどの成果があった。

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

下記の理由により、順調に研究が進展していると判断する。

(1) FINERの開発に関しては、科学者ユーザ層の開拓、科学的要請に基づく概念設計、受信機製作や分光計評価等、順調に推移した。また、観測周波数帯の拡大や将来大型計画への貢献など、当初予期していなかった新たな進展が認められ、受信機の性能を強化し、当該分野の内外に多角的に貢献しうる可能性を見出した。また、本研究課題で雇用・強力している若手研究者の活躍が目覚ましく、昨今天文学分野でその不足が懸念されている装置科学者の育成にも本研究課題が貢献していると考える。新たな進展に伴う装置設計の見直し等の遅れがあるものの、予備期間やスケジュールの工夫で吸収が可能である。

(2) 銀河分光探査に関しては、FINERが稼働する前の段階にあるにも関わらず、ALMA等の既存装置の競争的観測時間を着実に獲得しつつ、最新のJWSTを利用した成果を上げ、査読付き論文として質・量ともに良好な成果を創出していると考える。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

引き続きFINER受信機の開発を推進し、2025年度中の望遠鏡搭載、翌年度からの科学運用を目指す。またALMA・JWST等を用いた高赤方偏移の大質量銀河の観測的研究を推進する。以下に今後の年次計画を示す。
2024年度:受信機 (高周波バンド) と分光計の製作を完了し、国立天文台先端技術センターにおいてFINERの総合試験を開始する。国際光工学会SPIE天文学装置分科会(横浜, 6月)における発表とあわせ、計画全般及びこの時点までの技術的成果を速やかに論文としてまとめ出版する。Euclid衛星の初期成果の動向を注視しながら、ALMA/JWSTによる観測的研究を推進し、とくに星間物質の電離構造に関する研究を推進する。また、この間、LMT望遠鏡時間を最大限有効活用するために、LMT-FINER科学コンソーシアムを組織し、前・再電離期の開拓のみならず、太陽系内天体や銀河系内星・惑星系形成領域の星間化学等、天文学分野の裾野を広げるための活動も推進する。
2025年度:高周波バンドの評価を完了し、メキシコLMTにFINERを輸出する。引き続き日本国内で低周波バンドの評価を継続し、完了次第LMTへ移送する。メキシコ現地でのFINER立ち上げ、評価試験を実施し、技術的成果をまとめる。
2026年度:Hubble, JWST, Euclid宇宙望遠鏡による撮像観測で構築した前・再電離期銀河のカタログに対し、FINERやALMAさらにはJWSTを用いた分光観測を実施する。[OIII]・[CII]、および近赤外線撮像・分光データを用いた総合的なスペクトル解析を行い、星形成活動と星間物質の物理的性質を明らかにする。科学成果を速やかに論文としてまとめ、出版する。
