Outline of Research at the Start

現代核物理学の重要課題の一つは、白金やウランなどの重元素の起源の解明であり、そのための原子核実験からの寄与は、元素の合成過程に関与する千種類以上の短寿命原子核の特性を網羅的に測定することである。理化学研究所の加速器施設において、革新的な低速R Iビーム生成装置と質量分光器を組み合わせることにより、世界でもっとも広範囲の短寿命原子核の質量を能率よく高精度で測定できる3箇所の装置群を開発してきた。これらをさらに改良して駆使することで、宇宙における爆発的元素合成過程の解明の鍵となる結果が期待できる。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

令和6年度は、理化学研究所RIBFのBigRIPS-SLOWRI装置におけるオンラインマシンタイムを5回、延べ27日間実施し、いずれも大きな成果をあげることができた。特に世界中の原子核物理学者垂涎のSn-100およびその近傍の多くの原子核の質量測定ができ、そのN=Z=50の二重魔法性が保たれていることを確認できたことは特筆される(M. Rosenbusch et al, 準備中)。さらに同じN=Z核であるMo-84近傍の初質量測定によって、早い陽子捕獲過程のType-I X-ray burstにおけるZr-Nbサイクルの仮説を棄却することができた(S. Kimura et al., 投稿済)。また中性子過剰核において、希土類元素の太陽系元素存在比の解釈に重要な原子核であるSnとSb同位体の初質量測定に成功しており、解析を進めている(V. Phong et al., 準備中)。軽い核においてはAr-46,47, Cl-47の初質量測定に成功しており、N=32準魔法数の盛衰の解明が期待される(C. Fu et al., 準備中)。
GARIS装置においては、超重元素Db同位体の実験を進めているとともに、Cm標的を利用した多核子移行反応による中性子過剰アクチノイド同位体の質量測定の準備実験を進めた。さらに加速器を使わないカリフォルニウムの核分裂線源を利用した中性子過剰核の質量測定を進めており、順次論文発表も行っている(S. Kimura et al, PRC110,045810(2024))。またその過程で、ガスセル中の荷電状態に原子核スピンが影響している可能性がある新しい発見があった(S. Kimura et al., 投稿済)。
一方、より短寿命かつ収量の少ない原子核の精密質量測定に向けて開発している、新しい大型MRTOFの組み立ておよび調整は順調に進んでいる。

Reason

令和6年度は、後半に予定されていた加速器のマシンタイムが施設側の事情により全てキャンセルになってしまったのは残念であったが、前半にRIBFの新施設だけでも5実験、27日間のビームタイムを確保でき、いずれの実験も大成功を収めることができ、想定以上の成果があげられた。これはRIBFの実験全体でも突出した成果といえる。オフラインでの実験においても、未知の現象の発見の可能性が高く、その方面での今後の発展が期待される。新しい装置の開発も順調に進行しており、より一層広範囲の原子核の網羅的質量測定が可能になる。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

令和7年度は、海外における研究滞在により、科研費を留保している。科研費再開後は、より高速かつ高効率でイオントラップする高周波カーテンを実装したガスセル装置を完成させ、網羅的質量測定をより短寿命な希少同位体の測定に拡張して、重元素の起源解明に大きな寄与を与えることが期待される。
