Outline of Research at the Start

本研究の狙いは「超伝導デバイスの活用を前提とした新計算原理の創出と革新的コンピューティング技術の開拓」にある。世界最先端となるこれまでの基礎研究を起点とし、1) SFQ回路に最適な情報表現法とそれに基づく極低温演算メカニズムの導出、2) 異種新奇デバイス融合による極低温新メモリ/通信方式の探求、3)これらに基づく極低温超伝導汎用コンピュータ・アーキテクチャの創成、を目指す。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

異分野間連携(特に、材料、デバイス、回路、アーキテクチャ分野)に関しては、さらなる継続した相互理解の深化が必要であるものの、オンラインまたは対面での議論を積み重ねることにより、様々な観点からの問題解決策の提案やアイデア創出を実現できており、大きなシナジー効果を生み出している。また、研究スコープに関しても、提案当初は超伝導「古典」コンピュータのみを対象としていたが、本研究の成果が超伝導「量子」コンピュータへの展開が可能であることに着眼し、研究対象を拡大した。その結果、コンピュータアーキテクチャ分野で世界最高峰レベルの国際会議に採択されるなど、極めて大きなインパクトを生み出している。
【研究項目1】強誘電体付き新奇超伝導メモリ技術では電界印加による歪みに起因する超伝導転移温度の変化の観測に成功した。SFQ-光変換エキシトントランジスタ技術では、不均一場中での励起子ドリフトが励起子の輸送機構であるとの独自仮説の検証に着手し、従来とは異なる可能性が示唆された。新SFQデバイス/回路技術では、極低温アプロキシメートSFQ素子の試作を試みるとともに、設計技術の洗練により従来の約2倍となる動作速度の実証に成功した。
【研究項目2&3】新SFQ演算方式では、低電圧高速単一磁束量子回路を用いた高スループットのゲートレベル・パイプライン型8ビット整数積和演算(MAC)ユニットの40GHz超高速動作の実証に成功した。高性能SFQプロセッサ・アーキテクチャでは、SFQ回路の特徴を考慮した新しい汎用SFQプロセッサコア・アーキテクチャ、ならびに、複数チップでの実装を前提としたスケーラブルなAI学習アクセラレータ・アーキテクチャを考案した。さらに、本研究課題のスコープを量子コンピューティングへと拡大し、極低温古典/量子コンピューティング技術の研究を進めた。

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.

Reason

当初計画した内容については全ての項目で順調に進展しており、これに加え、誤り耐性超伝導量子コンピュータへの応用展開にも着手した。応募した研究計画調書では(いわゆる)古典コンピューティングのみを対象としていたが、本基盤研究技術の応用展開として量子コンピュータを対象にした研究を追加した。これは、量子ビットそのものの研究ではなく、本基盤研究で培った超伝導古典コンピューティング技術を量子ビットの制御や観測などに利活用するものである。応募時の研究計画に対して新たに追加した内容であり、現状では(当初計画していた)超伝導古典コンピューティングと量子コンピューティング応用を同時進行で進めている。コンピュータアーキテクチャ分野における最高峰国際会議(ISCA)に成果が採択されるなど特筆すべき成果を挙げており、これらを総合的に鑑み、想定を超える進展であると判断した。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

まず、2024年度は次のように進める。新奇デバイス研究開発(デバイスサイエンス側)に関しては、超伝導エレクトロニクスとスピントロニクス、超伝導エレクトロニクスとオプトエレクトロニクス、の異分野連携をそれぞれ加速する。強誘電体付き新奇超伝導メモリ技術に関しては、強誘電体基板上への磁性ジョセフソン接合(MJJ)の作製とプロセスの最適化を実施する。SFQ-光変換エキシトントランジスタ技術に関しては、歪量子井戸におけるエキシトン輸送の実現と不均一場におけるエキシトンドリフトの実験的検証を行う。新SFQデバイス/回路技術では、デバイス/回路パラメータの改善を図るとともに、誤り率を評価し、作成技術へフィードバックすることでデバイスとしての質の向上を目指す。一方、超伝導コンピュータアーキテクチャ研究開発(コンピュータサイエンス側)では、超伝導古典コンピューティングに関して、汎用マイクロプロセッサならびにAI学習アクセラレータの洗練により、さらなる電力効率の改善を目指す。また、これらの実行エンジンを核とし、マルチステージ分散メモリアーキテクチャの探索を加速する。加えて、新しい応用展開である超伝導量子コンピュータに関する研究開発では、これまでに考案したマルチステージ分散処理アーキテクチャを改善し、より多くのアプリケーションを実行可能とすべく汎用性の拡大を進める。そして、2025年度より2024年度に実施したモデリングの結果をシステム階層縦横断型異分野連携フレームワーク(システムレベル・シミュレータ/エスティメータ)へ統合し、新奇デバイスの研究開発の進展に伴い、その内容を本フレームワークへと反映することで、異分野連携方研究を加速する。
