本研究は古代ギリシア・ローマにおける弁論術の成立と18世紀西洋近代における弁論術の崩壊に焦点を当て、その成立と崩壊の歴史的・思想史的な意味を解明した上で、現代における弁論術的芸術論の有意義性を提言するものである。本研究は、これまで日本で本格的に扱われてこなかった弁論術を扱い、日本における学問的な不足を補う点、近代美学における古典弁論術の影響・受容を研究する点、古典弁論術と美学の統合を通して新しい研究分野の確立を目指す点で独自であり独創的である。本研究は西洋古典学、美学、文芸学、音楽学、演劇学を専門とする5名の研究者から組織されている。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In the mid-18th century in the West, aesthetics was established and rhetoric collapsed, or rather, rhetoric collapsed and aesthetics was established. In this large historical context, our research clarified that aesthetics has its own individual circumstances for the establishment of aesthetics, and its own individual circumstances for the collapse of rhetoric, and that rhetoric was excluded from arts. The subjects of analysis are the relationship between the five divisions of rhetoric - "invention," "arrangement," "elocution," "memory," and "recitation" - and Kant, Batou, Alstedt, Baumgarten, Takemitsu Toru, and Kamo Chomei.
In the world where the "invention" division of rhetoric is disregarded today, our research proposes that new possibilities for rhetoric can be opened up by placing emphasis once again on the "invention" division and restoring the order of "invention," "arrangement," and "elocution" to their original order.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究で明らかにされたことは次のようなものである。弁論術が美学の成立に与えた影響は大きいが、それ以外にも百科全書的思想の影響もあること、芸術から弁論術が排除され芸術概念が成立していく過程、カントのレトリック観の特徴、西洋のリズムの代わりに「間」を音楽の自然な姿として理解した武満徹の音楽観、俳優の暗記の仕方、鴨長明の和歌の分類、「発想」「配置」「措辞」「記憶」「口演」の順番の重要性。いずれも、美学と弁論術の関係を考える上で、重要な研究成果である。
